Cheyenne River Sioux ▬ NEEDS & PRIORITIES
Click here to return to ....
Here are the priorities agreed upon with the Tribal Council:
Help Destitute Families by Repairing/Replacing and Winterizing their homes - The Tribal Council considered this to be the most immediate priority, to help those with the most serious housing needs. The council members agreed to put together a specific list of families and needs so we could try to chip away at this mountain of need. There was also a desire to involve and train younger adults with these basic skills of construction as a way of providing them an income source.
Help Destitute Families by Acquiring and Installing Wood-burning Stoves - Another basic life need was to acquire simple wood burning stoves and have them properly installed. This could also be used as a training opportunity for the youth.
Help the Community by Repairing Community Centers and Churches - Some of these community centers and churches need work just to become functional once again.
Help the Community by Providing Emergency Generators for the Community Centers - The Community Centers are often needed to temporarily house families in an emergency. Some Centers had them, some needed something larger, and some had nothing at all.
Help the Children and Youth by Providing a Youth Shelter – This could actually be tied to the community centers. Since one shelter would not cover all 19 communities, something available at each community center would help those in that area. A partnership with the churches could be an excellent way for each community to reach the youth.
The most URGENT NEED is to get the most severely damaged homes repaired or replaced. This needs to be started again in early Spring 2010. For this purpose, we need:
Cabin Construction Matierials - $6,200
Travel Expenses - $1,200
Bibles - $300
The Conquering Indian books - $200
VOLUNTEERS TO GO AND HELP
COATS, BLANKETS, WARM CLOTHING in good condition
Please PRAY for this need, for the volunteers to go, and for those in need on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation.
